Chapter Ten
âLord Landon?â Bridget looked towards the gentleman who now held her heart. âThere is something I must ask you.â
The gentleman smiled down at her as they walked arm in arm through Hyde Park.
âBut of course.â
She cleared her throat.
âMight you consider asking Lady Yardley to assist you in your search for your brother?â
Lord Landon immediately frowned.
âYou speak of âThe London Ledger.â
âYes, I do.â Bridget squeezed his arm lightly. âIt is something that can be easily done and in such a way, it will not be obvious as to why you seek your brother.â
Lord Landon shook his head.
âWere I to write that I seek out my brother, that I should be grateful for any knowledge of where he is, I would not surprise many people. They would believe that my brother has taken himself away somewhere, and that I seek him to set to rights whatever wrongs he has done.â His shoulders dropped, his head turned away from her. âIt would not be the first time.â

âI hope that you know I will stand by your side even if the truth should come out, do you not?â
Lord Landon threw her a brief smile.
âUnless your father should forbid it.â
Bridget did not allow herself to become so concerned, shaking her head.
âMy father agreed to our courtship, did he not? He did so with such swiftness that I think even my mother was astonished.â
Lord Landon chuckled, though his smile remained.
âIt does not mean that he will continue to agree, should what I have done be discovered.â
Bridget took a deep breath.
âIn such a circumstance, I am certain that we would find a way.â Her face grew hot at the sharp look which came to her, with Lord Landon possibly understanding what she meant. She lifted one shoulder in half shrug, choosing honesty over pretense. âAfter all, what would one scandal be on top of another?â
Much to her relief, Lord Landon laughed aloud.
âAre you truly so committed to me that you would consider eloping?â
Bridget smiled as she spoke.
âI have already declared myself quite determined to stand by you, Lord Landon,â she told him. âDo you truly think that such a thing would not be permissible for me?â
They had not spoken of marriage, but he had made himself clear as far as his intentions, and she now was making it plain that she had no desire to pull back from a gentleman who had stolen her heart. Even though his statement had shocked her, the truth he had told her revealed more of his character to her. The fact that he had been so honest was in his favor, and there was
